Real quick: give me YouTube playlists of some excellent bands and singers from the UK and Ireland in the times I listed in the headline. Help me help my dad, who wants to move away from American rock for a change.

I mean, I want to see a particular vintage, but I can see how a 20-year gap can be broad.

I could be here all year......
The jam
Thin Lizzy
T-rex
Suzi Quattro

You could binge on basically all the Shadows ever. If being mellow isn’t a problem.

Or you could go with the Small Faces:

Umm, you’re right. I just associate him with all that 60's stuff and, yeah oops.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m just more familiar with the 60's than the 70's or 80's in british rock.
Also, it’s a good thing, right? I mean, it’s broad, but there are LOTS of good bands from the UK in that era. The Who, Eric Clapton, and of course the Beatles are just a few that are almost too obvious to mention. Like giving the 911 as an answer to my other question.

Well said. Most of the best rock influencers were British guys who discovered American soul before it was widespread here.

Oh yeah also Led Zeppelin. I mean, one of my favorite bands of all time; I still listen to them after all these years.

Can’t miss Sultans of Swing, early stuff that still sounds modern.

I have had moments where I wondered how, exactly, the UK produces such amazing music all the time. I think it’s still true, there are lots of successful and/or fantastic music acts coming out of that little island over there. Per capita, it’s gotta be an unusually high concentration of musical talent.

Donovan, The Clash, X-Ray Spex
Here is a crossover, Spanish Garage Rock band playing some American Garage rock songs
I don’t know your dad’s taste and I am sure I could think of better recommendations, but my mind is blanking out.

Related: Nordic and Dutch DJs. Lots of the foundations of modern EDM from the 2010's came from Tiesto, van Buuren, Swedish House Mafia, Alesso, and Avicii.

Guns ‘n’ Roses, Scorpion, Air Supply... generally slow rock.

Early U2 - Out of Control
The Thinnest of Lizzies (though he might already have this on his ‘American’ rock lists)
Waterboys
Pogues
Virgin Prunes

I assume you mean acts that got little-to-no airplay in the States. In which case, I gotta share this one I stumbled upon a few years ago: the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
Catchy? Check. British? Well, Scottish... Occasional instrumental sections? Oh yeah. I’m hooked.

Yes:
Slade:
Oh, forgot, Joe Cocker:

In the U.K. music has always been important from social to political.
I’d say it’s one of the two main things that define Britain, it’s music and it’s comedy. If we are down, lonely, hard at work, stressed, etc... it’s music and our strange comedy that keeps us going.
During times of war.
To political protest.

For me it’s, Brothers In Arms.
Such a powerful and emotional song.

Right, I did forget that... So when you say “American rock”, does that mean you’re referring only to bands that were actually from the US? ’Cause our radio stations (including the rock ones) frequently play music from other countries, as long as the lyrics are in English. I’ve gotten so used to hearing a lot of songs that it surprises me sometimes to learn that a particular singer or group is from Canada or England.

That’s good too. “Why Worry” is another favorite. I’ve worn out a few copies of this album.

People have named most of the big bands, though The Kinks should be here somewhere, but it’s a little thin on the Irish side. A little Thin Lizzy will fix that.
